The Brainerd Warriors football team aims for its second straight sturdy performance at 7 p.m. Friday when it plays the winless Apollo Eagles in a Central Lakes Conference game at Michie Field in St. Cloud.
Brainerd (2-1) will attempt to build on last week's come-from-behind 29-19 victory at St. Cloud Tech in which it managed season highs in yards (275) and points. Trailing 12-7 in the third quarter Brainerd reeled off 22 unanswered points. Fullback Adam Hardy rushed for 80 yards and three touchdowns and halfback Mike Weiss added 116 yards and a score.
The Warriors' defense turned in another sound effort, particularly in the second half when it surrendered only seven points, five first downs and 138 yards. Brainerd forced three Tech turnovers in the contest.
Brainerd needs a win to remain in the thick of the conference race. Unbeatens Willmar and Alexandria play Friday at Alexandria with the winner in the driver's seat for the conference crown. Brainerd, whose only loss was to Willmar, hosts Alexandria Sept. 29.
Offensively, Brainerd is being paced by halfback Mike Weiss who has rushed 45 times for 221 yards (4.9 average) and one touchdown. Fullback Adam Hardy has added 157 yards on 37 attempts (4.2) and has scored five times.
Leading tacklers for the Warriors against Tech were free safety Dan Karlgaard with 19, strong safety Ben Winterfeld 12 and linebackers Lukas Marks and Weiss 11 each. Tackle leaders for the season are Karlgaard 55, Marks 48 and Weiss 43.
Apollo is scoring enough to win but hasn't been able to stop opposing offenses, averaging 22 points while giving up an average of 38.3. The Eagles' ground game is led by fullback Shawn Dockendorf who has gained 295 yards and scored three times. Quarterback Neil Glein has completed 38 of 78 passes (49 percent) for 387 yards and three touchdowns.
The Eagles opened with a 42-28 non-conference loss at Robbinsdale Armstrong. Rocori then thumped the Eagles 32-0 in conference play and Willmar clipped Apollo 54-31 last week.
Against Armstrong, Robbinsdale rattled off 36 unanswered points to seize a 42-6 edge. Dockendorf rushed for 97 yards and a score, Glein was 18 of 33 passing for 196 yards and three touchdowns and Jeremy Garding caught six passes for 110 yards and two scores.
Dockendorf rushed for 75 yards against Rocori and Glein was 10 of 19 passing for 83 yards.
