Could I have one of those bark collars also for 14th Avenue Northeast? I've been good!
Remember student learning?
Ruth Gmeinder's resignation demonstrates the level of professionalism existing throughout the Brainerd School District. She not only threw the finance guy under the bus, she drove over him a few times. Is it any surprise we're in this mess with 20 years of that kind of leadership? Of course, no one is innocent. Not the board, the administrators or the employees and unions (who suddenly have their hands out for raises). When's the last time any one of them mentioned student learning?
Circle your wagons, folks
Congratulations to the Brainerd City Council for promoting farm animals in the city limits. I personally keep a milking cow in the third stall of my garage because fresh milk in the morning is so nice. I'm hoping we can convince the council to remove the pavement on Main Street, though. It's hard on my plow horses' hooves, not to mention my wagon wheels.
(Editor's Note: The Vox Pop Department of Progress for Brainerd thinks this is a pretty, uh, chicken comment. It overlooks all the economic development possibilities, including a horseshoe factory and a blacksmith superstore. That would be something to crow about.)
Difficult financial times
We live in difficult financial times! Yet the C-I School Board wants us to buy a 10-year inflation-based levy. Taxes on a $100,000 home might be $84 the first year, but could climb to $130 over a 10-year period with 5 percent per year inflation. Would you ever buy anything with an inflation-based purchase price? I think not!
Will the taxpayers be made aware as to how much of the $595 per pupil revenue will be for sports, equipment, social programs and clubs, coaches, assistants and travel expenses vs. how much of that $595 will be for core academic subjects and teachers? As for the $100 maintenance cost, what percent is for sport complex maintenance and what percent for the academic areas of the schools?
Go, Ruth! At least someone has some scruples. There is something rotten in Denmark.
Some money should go to busing
This is about the school money. Before starting to divide up the $2 million on wages, let some be used for busing so the kids won't have to walk to school this winter.
Coward's way out
Strange that school board decisions for the last 20 years are now being felt by the whole community and the one person involved in those decisions is bailing out on us in these difficult times. Does she think she's the only person who's health has been affected by the current situation? Have her personal finances been affected? Have her children been affected? Seems to me this is the coward's way out.
