Brainerd American Legion events

Prime rib dinner by Dewayne Collins will be served beginning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Brainerd American Legion. Cost: $10.

The Brainerd American Legion will have its pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 28. Cost: $8.

Auxiliary luncheon planned

The Brainerd American Legion Auxiliary will serve a chicken ala king luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the American Legion, 708 Front Street, Brainerd. Cost: $5. Call 829-2249 for takeout orders.

Young at HART Educational program

HART will offer educational classes from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the first Saturday of each month October through May (excluding December) at the HART Shelter for children 4-10 years old to learn about animal issues, create fun animal crafts and spend time with the HART animals.

Enrollment is limited to 20 students per session.

No charge but donations are welcome.

Classes are taught by professional teachers and assisted by HART volunteers.

To enroll call Jan at 828-3449 or stop at HART for a registration form. Registration deadline is Sept. 30.

This program is made possible through a from Crow Wing Power Roundup Program.

Class of 1958

The class of 1958 has changed the monthly meeting 10 a.m. Thursday at the Northwest Pizza/Broadwalk Bread and Bagel.

Lakes Area Caged Bird Club bird expo

The Lakes Area Caged Bird Club is having a Bird Expo from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the Northland Arboretum. This is a free event which will allow families to see many types of pet birds. Bird owners and breeders will be there to answer any questions.

The event is entirely informational.

Brainerd Lakes Area Audubon Society

The Brainerd Lakes Area Audubon Society will sponsor a home energy conservation presentation at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Northland Arboretum in Brainerd. Speaker will be Rick Pederson, energy management consultant with Crow Wing Cooperative Power and Light.

CWC Genealogical Society to meet

Crow Wing County Genealogical Society will meet from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the Family History Center, 101 Buffalo Hills Lane W, Brainerd. John Van Essen will present the program, a review of his personal genealogical research. For more information call 829-1663 or 963-7843.

Class of 1944 will meet at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Northwind Grille.

MS Cruise for a Cure fundraiser planned

The MS Cruise for a Cure is a fund raiser planned for 5 p.m. Sept. 27 for the Minnesota Chapter of the National MS Society. There will be cruise on the Mississippi Belle with Famous Dave's catering the dinner. Doug and Renee Campbell will be the auctioneers. Cost is $30 per ticket. Contact Dave Cowell at 838-7628.

Friday dinner at Brainerd VFW club

The Brainerd VFW Club will serve prime rib for the Friday dinner at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $10. Reservations are appreciated by calling 831-2112.

Baxter Lions Club

BAXTER - The Baxter Lions Club will meet on Monday at Camp Vanasek. Lion Sandy will serve dinner at 6:30 p.m. followed by the regular meeting at 7 p.m.

Ray's Promenaders Square Dance Club

Ray's Promenaders Square Dance Club will offer square dance lessons for anyone interested in learning how to square dance starting Oct. 6 from 7-9 p.m. at the Franklin Art Center Cafeteria. For more information, call 829-7409 or 764-2654.

Woodland Wildflower Red Hat group

Certificates received at VFW state convention

The following certificates were received by the Brainerd VFW No. 1547 at the VFW state convention in June: Outstanding Hospital Program, Outstanding Stamp and Sewing Programs, Outstanding Veteran and Family Support Program, Outstanding Buddy Poppy Promotion, Outstanding Make a Difference Day, the Halloween party at the Armory for deployed families.

BNSF Vets breakfast meeting

The BNSF Vets will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Northwind Grille. Discussion will be the upcoming dinner.

Alpha Chapter No. 23 OES

The Alpha Chapter No. 23 OES will meet at the Masonic Hall on Monday for dinner at 6:15 p.m. and the meeting at 7:30 p.m. Servers will be Staples members.

Local holocaust survivor to speak in Pine River

PINE RIVER - Anita Dittman, one of the surviving members of "The Greatest Generation" (as penned by Tom Brokaw) will be speaking on Sept. 27 at the community Warehouse in Pine River.

Anita's book, "Trapped in Hitler's Hell," is a true account of her experience as a teenager desperately fighting for survival in a concentration camp in Nazi Germany.

Daughter's of Destiny, a nondenominational fellowship of ladies from the Pine River area, is sponsoring this event called "Surviving the Journey." The event will begin at 11 a.m. This luncheon will include music, drama and an inspirational time of learning of God's miraculous mercy, help and faithfulness.

Tickets are available for $6 at the Warehouse, Beth's Place and Super Valu (gas counter only) in Pine River and at The Corner Store in Backus. Day care provided with advanced notice by calling Cathy Erickson at 568-4022 or Sharon Fey at the Warehouse at 587-5404.
