Baxter Mayor Gary Muehlhausen saw flames coming up around the engine as he drove his family's motor home back from a weekend camping trip Sunday.
No one was injured.
Muehlhausen was alone in the vehicle. His wife, Kathy, was following in another vehicle with friends who had been part of a "girls camping weekend" in Crosslake. Muehlhausen had gone up to Crosslake to drive the motor home back to Baxter.
The fire started in the engine. The vehicle was a total loss. The Brainerd Fire Department responded to the scene at the intersection of County State Aid Highway 3 and the North Long Lake Road about 1:50 p.m. Sunday.
Muehlhausen had been able to drive the motor home off the roadway.
Kathy Muehlhausen said she was dropping friends off and heard about the fire when her husband reached her by cell phone.
"By the time I pulled in there it was almost gone," she said.
She said firefighters and bystanders offered assistance.
"Everybody was very nice and we appreciate it," she said, adding the motor home and its contents can be replaced, but they were thankful no one was injured.
