A benefit is being planned for Donny Livingston's family from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Eagles Club in Brainerd.
Livingston died Aug. 19 of lung and brain cancer.
There will be live music featuring the Kenny Jake Band and others. There will be raffles, a silent auction and sloppy Joe plates for $3.50.
Camp Ripley to host open house
Camp Ripley will present an open house from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday.
Events include face painting, a rock climbing wall, NASCAR simulator, Humvee rides and an obstacle course for children. Fingerprinting will be done and shows and events include the Mounted Patrol, K-9 and tae kwon do. Minnesota Department of Transportation vehicles will be on display. And there will be a 5K river run.
The event is free and open to the public.
Camp Ripley is seven miles north of Little Falls off Highway 371.
ASL Club at college to host free movie Sept. 26
On Sept. 26, the American Sign Language Club at Central Lakes College in Brainerd will host a free presentation of "Through Deaf Eyes" in the Dryden Theatre from 1 to 3 p.m. in Brainerd.
"Through Deaf Eyes" is a PBS documentary exploring 200 years of deaf life in America. The film presents the shared experiences of American history from the perspective of deaf citizens.
The documentary takes a straight-forward look at life for people who are part of the cultural-linguistic group who use American Sign Language and often define themselves as "Deaf" - with a capital and cultural, "D."
National Deaf Awareness Week is observed Sept. 23-30.
Dementia training set
"Understanding and Responding to the Effects of Dementia" training for community volunteers and others who offer respite care to older adults will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Brainerd Public Library meeting room. No charge for those who attend.
Ward to speak Monday
Rep. John Ward will be speaking on legislative updates, Minnesota Teen Challenge, early childhood development, at 7 p.m. Monday at First Congregational Church, 415 Juniper St., Brainerd.
The event is sponsored by the American Association of Women.
Family fall event planned Saturday
The Brainerd Lakes Area Early Childhood Coalition is hosting a fall event for families - "Harvesting a Bountiful Future at The Farm on St. Mathias." This kid-friendly event will be from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $8 for adults and $4 for kids. Children under age 1 will be admitted free.
Enjoy hot dogs and other food concessions, a bake sale, fun farm activities and a live family friendly auction with Andrew Bachmann, 2007 Minnesota state reserve champion auctioneer, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Dozens of items geared toward adults and children will be available, such as quilted wall art, handbags, jewelry, bicycle accessories, homemade canned goods, seasonal decorations, T-shirts, sweatshirts, gift certificates, toys, gift baskets, books, fishing items and much more.
This event includes all that The Farm on St. Mathias offers, including a big pumpkin patch (pumpkins may be purchased), a corn maze, hayrides, giant slide, live animals and more.
