EAST GULL LAKE - Dr. Mark A. Muesing, 75, of East Gull Lake, Minn., passed away Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at his home after a courageous battle with lung and brain cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, at Christ Lutheran Church in Baxter with Pastor Wilbert Neumann officiating. Friends are welcome to gather Sunday afternoon from 4-6 p.m. at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter. Interment will take place at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm, Minn., on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Mark's grandchildren will act as pallbearers.
Dr. Mark Muesing
Mark was born July 18, 1934, in New Ulm, Minn., the son of Oscar and Esther (Srock) Muesing. He graduated from Slayton High School in 1952 and from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1959. He was united in marriage to Shirley Anderson in Minneapolis on July 20, 1958. After interning in Duluth from 1959-1960, Dr. Muesing was employed in Tyler, Minn., as a family physician and later at Lake Region Clinic in Brainerd. Before retiring, he also served at the VA Hospital in St. Cloud, Minn.
Mark was a longtime, active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Baxter where he held a number of positions, including choir director. He was involved in many local and state Academy of Family Practice Committees: 1. Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice; 2. Charter Fellowship of the American Board of Family Practice; 3. Member of the Initial Curriculum Community of Family Practice Department and; 4. Emeritus Clinical Associate Professor for the University of Minnesota Medical School. In addition he also served in the Army National Guard for 10 years, acting as state surgeon for two of those years. He was a member of the Phi Rho Medical Fraternity and served as president of Vadheim Medical Center in Tyler, Minn., and St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd, Minn.
Mark was an avid hunter and fisherman. For more than 30 years he was a volunteer gun safety instructor in the Brainerd area. He enjoyed donating his time at the Camp Ripley Museum. He liked to read, golf and spend his winters at South Padre Island, Texas. He also enjoyed woodcarving and genealogy. He loved to spend time with his family and grandchildren.
He will be greatly missed by his family. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Shirley; his children, Linda Kropp, of Pinehurst, N.C., Janet (Mark) Leitzke, of Gladstone, Ore., Mark O. (Carla) Muesing, of Maple Grove, Minn., and Kurt (Tammy) Muesing, of Baxter, Minn.; 11 grandchildren, Lindsay, John, Kirsten and Mark Kropp, Maggie, Molly, Karl and Kyle Leitzke, Grace Muesing and Jenny and Andrew Muesing; sister, Ann Behning, of Bloomington, Minn.; mother-in-law, Virginia Anderson; siblings-in-law, Sheila and Neil McLouth and Sandy and Terry Nelson; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Pastor L. O. Anderson; and brothers-in-law, Duane Behning and Jerry Langston.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Chapel of Baxter.
