Mrs. Evelyn M. Stevens, 81, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at the Minnesota Veteran's Home in Silver Bay, Minn., where she had been a resident for more than six years. She was born Feb. 18, 1922, in Brainerd, Minn., to Emil and Clara (Tollefson) Alberg. She graduated from Washington High School in Brainerd in 1940. She then attended the Minnesota School of Business before going to Washington, D.C., in 1942. She enlisted in the Navy on March 24, 1943, and advanced to Yeoman 1st class before her honorable discharge in October 1945. She married Charles Stevens in Brainerd on Sept. 10, 1944, while they were both on leave from the Navy. In January 1946, they moved to Oakland, Calif. She worked in the office of Wear Ever Cooking Utensil Company before joining the Naval Reserve in 1951 until Jan. 20, 1954. She moved to Lafayette, Calif., in 1951. She and her husband then moved to Horseshoe Lake north of Brainerd in 1982.
Survivors include her husband, Charles E. Stevens, Merrifield.
Her parents, her brother Lawrence Alberg who was a Baton Death March survivor and died in 1995, and her half brother Clarence Alberg, preceded her in death.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Ossipee Community Church, Merrifield, with Pastors Ralph Hegman and Ewald Eisele officiating. Interment will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Camp Ripley. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19 at Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home, Brainerd, and one hour before services Saturday at the church.
Memorials are preferred to the Gideons.
