WATERTOWN, S.D. -- Grover H. Peterson, 80, Watertown, S.D., died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at a Watertown area care center.
He was born Feb. 15, 1921, in Little Sioux, Iowa, to Sievert and Minnie (Nelson Skow) Peterson. He attended rural schools in Codington County of South Dakota. Following school, he farmed in Phipps Township. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following his discharge, he returned to the farm.
He married Joyce Thomas on June 1, 1947, in Florence, S.D. The couple farmed until 1972. They later moved northwest of Watertown. They then moved to Lake Kampeska for six years and then moved to Sunchase Apartment in October 2000. He was employed at Watertown Public Schools from 1972 until he retired. He served as a Phipps Township assessor and was a Belmont Rural School board member. He was a member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church and the Codington County American Legion Post 17.
Survivors include his wife, Watertown, S.D.; two sons, Doug, Hartford, S.D., and David, Brainerd; one daughter, Candace Johnson, Watertown, S.D.; two brothers, Selmer, Wallace, S.D., and Lawrence, Watertown, S.D.; two sisters, Sybil Kingsley, Red Bluff, Calif., and Gretchen Robb, Costa Mesa, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
One brother and one sister died earlier.
Services were scheduled for today at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Watertown, S.D., with Revs. Dennis Hayes and John Carter officiating. Burial was to be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown, S.D., with military graveside rites by Codington County American Legion Post 17.
