Bob Elling of Aitkin won the Fifth Annual Northern Pike Contest at Ron's Squaw Point Resort with a 16-2 specimen, winning $1,000. Runner-up was Ron Kobes of Brainerd with a 15-8 northern, Tom Hegstad was third and Chuck Steinbauer, fourth.
40 years ago (1969)
(Photo) Dick King, of Brainerd, displays a trio of northerns scaling 55 pounds which he weighed in at King's Sporting Goods in Brainerd. King caught the 20, 18 and 17 pound pike on Gull Lake. It was the largest limit here in years.
60 years ago (1949)
John Aiton has been reappointed to the committee to find a permanent school patrol camp site. Aiton serves as chairman of the committee. The past year the camp was held at the Crow Wing County fair grounds.
80 years ago (1929)
Concrete was being poured today for the basement of the Brainerd-Pine Beach Hotel as the builder pushed construction to complete as much of the $135,000 structure before cold weather sets in. Occupancy is expected by June 1 next year.
100 years ago (1909)
When the late S. Katz, formerly of this city, recently died in Minneapolis, his grandson, Isaac Greenburg, came to Brainerd to look after his store. Under a designated floor board he found a buried kettle which contained $4,000 in gold coins. Katz didn't like banks.
