LITTLE FALLS -- In what was a sneak peek of a possible Central Lakes Conference cross country showdown between Little Falls' Jon Stoltman and Brainerd's Chris Woodard, it was the Flyer that won the first battle.
Stoltman, ranked seventh in Class 2A, finished second at the 39th annual Lucky Lindy meet Thursday with a time of 16:23. Woodard finished fifth, posting a time of 16:37.
Mike Krisch of Hopkins, the top-ranked runner in 2A, won the meet in dominating fashion with a time of 15:34.
While Woodard couldn't quite catch Stoltman, the Warriors did capture runner-up honors with a team score of 111 points. Hopkins won with 35.
Stoltman, unbeaten in his first three races this season, started strong but couldn't catch Krisch on his home course.
"I was relatively conservative about going out," Stoltman said. "I was trying to build to get faster at the end of the race instead of the beginning. Overall, I was very happy with my race, especially being in my hometown and in front of my friends and family."
The leaders started fast and after the first mile Woodard was back in 15th place. But the senior had gas left in his tank and charged hard throughout the rest of the race.
"I ran a smart race," Woodard said. "The mile I was out at 5:05 and I didn't have to work too hard for that so I was able to save for the end of the race. Strategy wise, I had a good last mile. I was hoping to catch a few more guys at the end though."
Brainerd sophomore Ty Hunt finished 10th with a time of 17:07, shaving more than 20 seconds off his personal best, to help the Warriors finish ahead of seven CLC teams.
"Justin Tyner was 22 seconds faster than his best time ever," said Warriors coach Dave Herath.
S-M entered the season with little returning experience and a number of questions marks. Thursday, some of those questions were answered.
"We were hoping to move forward and we did," Cardinals coach Gene Mattila said. "We haven't had more than three guys break 18 minutes yet and (Thursday) we had all four runners do that."
