STAPLES -- A 17-year-old Staples boy has died after being found unresponsive at a rural Byron Township property early Saturday morning.
Cass County Sheriff Randy Fisher said his department was notified of the death Monday of Christopher E. Braford.
Fisher said the sheriff's department, Motley rescue personnel and Staples Ambulance responded to a call at 2 a.m. Saturday at the rural property. The caller reported that a person at the property had been struck by a vehicle. When law enforcement arrived, the scene appeared to be "a beer party situation," said Fisher, where a significant number of young people were gathered.
Braford was transported to Staples Hospital and later transferred to the St. Cloud Hospital. Fisher said it did not appear to medical officials that Braford received a traumatic injury that would be consistent with being struck by a vehicle, but his cause of death has yet to be determined.
An autopsy has been scheduled.
