Posted: Monday, September 16, 2002

WINDOM (AP) -- A Lake City man drowned in a boating accident on Cottonwood Lake in Windom, the Cottonwood County sheriff's office said Monday.

Craig Robert Wolf, 25, was one of two passengers in a boat who fell out and into the water around 4 p.m. Sunday. An 8-year-old remained in the boat.

The boat was driven by a 17-year-old. When she realized that Wolf and Elizabeth Marie Oakland, 20, of Mountain Lake, were not in the boat, she turned around but couldn't find them, Sheriff Bob Haken said.

Oakland was later rescued and taken to Windom Hospital with no apparent injuries, while Wolf's body was recovered from about 10 feet of water, Haken said.

Cloquet man dies in St. Paul Classic Bike Tour

ST. PAUL (AP) -- A bicyclist riding in the St. Paul Classic Bike Tour collapsed and died near the halfway mark of the 31-mile course.

The name of the middle-aged man from Cloquet was being withheld pending notification of relatives. He collapsed at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday. The cause of death was not immediately known.

"He passed away on the route," said Mary Morse, head of the St. Paul Neighborhood Energy Consortium, sponsor of the bike ride, which drew 6,000 cyclists this year.

None of the man's family members were with him, but he apparently had traveled from his home near Duluth to St. Paul with a church group to participate in the ride.

"It's sad something like this would happen on such a beautiful day when someone is doing something they love," Morse said. "We extend our sincere condolences to the family."

There were some tough hills on the course, but participants Benito Garcia and Adam Brock said the course and the cool weather were ideal.
