Hazel Smith

MOTLEY -- Hazel Smith, age 88, of Motley, died Sept. 12, 2004, at her home. Hazel Irene DeWald was born on April 15, 1916, in Staples, daughter of Arthur and Florence (Eastman) DeWald. She grew up and attended school at Staples. She was united in marriage on May 1, 1934, in Minneapolis to Malcolm Smith. Hazel was a waitress/cook at various restaurants in the area. She was a member of the Poplar Community Church, the Poplar Ladies Birthday Club and the "Dutch Club" Poplar Senior Club.

Hazel is survived by her children, Ray (Kiyono) Smith, of Berea, Ky., Dona Spilman, of Leader, Dale (Natsu) Smith, of Motley, Robert (Janet) Smith, of Waseca, Della Hanson, of Motley, Keith (Anna) Smith, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Echo (Dennis) Schneider, of Staples; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charles (Muriel) DeWalt, of Federal Way, Wash. She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm in 1975, and her parents.

Graveside services will be on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Poplar Cemetery in Staples with the Rev. Neal Malcore officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples from 6-8 p.m. Services are entrusted to the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples.
