FORT RIPLEY - Gertrude Hughes, age 92, resident of Fort Ripley, passed away Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at Good Samaritan Society Bethany in Brainerd.
Gertrude was born in Fort Ripley on July 25, 1917, to John and Clara Perlinger. She married Alex Hughes Dec. 26, 1935, at St. Mathias where she has been a member from birth to death. She was a Christian mother and CCW member at St. Mathias and volunteered at the blood bank. She belonged to the neighborhood craft club. She worked at St. Joseph's Hospital at the young age of 17 to pay off her sisters hospital bill and then again from 1978 to 1993 where at the age of 76, she had to retire as a nursing assistant due to health. She was possibly SJMC's youngest and oldest employee.
She is survived by he children, daughters Violet Meyer, Yvonne (Homer) Cronquist, Alexia (Clarence) Cripps, Connie (John) Wonsik, Patricia Sinna, and son Alex (Kathleen) Hughes; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband Alex, her parents, her daughter Audrey and son-in-law Alvin Tester, son-in-law Marvin Meyer and son-in-law Frank Sinna, her two sisters, two brothers, her grandson Kevin and great-grandson Luke.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at St. Mathias Catholic Church with Father Steven LaFlamme officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mathias Cemetery. Visitation times are Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. and a rosary at 7 p.m. And Wednesday one hour prior to services at the church with a rosary by the Christian Mothers at 10:30 a.m.
