A celebration of crossing guards

American Legion and Sons of American Legion members gathered over the weekend at Legionville for the 40th annual Camp-O-Ree.

Camp-O-Ree featured games and food for children and adults. And, of course, learning for the children.

Sponsorship from Minnesota's American Legion posts and units and private donors supply the funds necessary to continue the work at Legionville. The mission is to train school safety patrol students for their work at school intersections around the state.

The only one of it's kind in the nation, the camp was first created and located at Camp Ripley. It was later moved to the Brainerd Fairgrounds, and in 1956, the students moved to the present location on the southeast shore of North Long Lake near Merrifield.

Laurie Wells of Kimball served Bob Miller, one of the early directors of Legionville, on Saturday during the 40th annual Camp-O-Ree. The primary mission of Legionville is to train school patrol students.

After the school patrol students are finished training, they can relax and enjoy the lake atmosphere of a central Minnesota resort.
