Brainerd High School graduate Justin Grunewald was the fastest University of Minnesota runner and placed third overall as the Gopher men's cross country team opened its season Saturday with a second-place finish in the Brigham Young Autumn Classic at Orem, Utah.
Grunewald, a sophomore, covered the 4-mile course in 20 minutes, 21.7 seconds. His performance marked the first time he has crossed the finish line as the Gophers' No. 1 runner.
At last weekend's Iowa State Open, BHS graduates Cory Olson and Chris Woodard finished in the top 50 for North Dakota State University.
Olson placed 42nd, completing the 8-kilometer course in 29:08.01. Woodard was 47th at 29:52.05.
Minnesota and NDSU will compete in the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 24 at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights.
CMC honors Pierz's Lisa Pohlkamp
Lisa Pohlkamp of Pierz has been named the Central Minnesota Conference female athlete of the week ending Sept. 10.
Pohlkamp, a senior middle hitter in her fourth year as a varsity starter, helped the Pioneers to three straight wins. She contributed 52 kills, 8 blocks, 19 digs and was 32-for-33 serving in the three games. She had 28 kills against Sauk Rapids.
Flyers honored by Central Lakes Conference
Little Falls Flyers Elise Floersheim and Megan Meyer have named the Central Lakes Conference performers of the week ending Sept. 12.
In girls' soccer, Floersheim, a senior forward, scored one goal and had one assist.
Meyer, a senior cross country runner, placed sixth at the Wadena-Deer Creek meet with a time of 16:13.
Whalen to speak to boosters club
Brainerd Warrior girls' tennis coach Marnie Whalen will be the speaker at the Brainerd Sports Boosters Club meeting, which begins noon Thursday at the Moose Lodge.
Swimmer Jessica Reese, the Warrior Athlete of the Week, will be honored.
