A 15-year-old boy is in custody after stabbing two people Saturday at a party northeast of Walker on the Leech Lake Reservation, according to the Cass County Sheriff's Department.
The fight happened shortly after midnight. Cass County Sheriff's Sgt. Scott Thompson said it appeared the two victims, Justin Moshier, 18, Walker, and James Wehaus, 15, Walker, were fighting when the 15-year-old suspect intervened.
"It sounds like he was trying to help out a friend," Thompson said.
Wehaus suffered a cut on his left wrist. He was treated at St. Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids and released.
Moshier suffered multiple stab wounds, including a punctured lung, Thompson said. He was transported to MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D., where he was reported in satisfactory condition late Monday.
The 15-year-old suspect fled the party. Later that morning, his parents led him to the sheriff's office where he was arrested for assault. He is being held in a juvenile facility pending formal charges.
Thompson said several juveniles and adults were at the party, where alcohol was being consumed. Alcohol was a factor in the stabbing and Thompson said further alcohol-related charges could be filed against others at the party.
"There were numerous people on site when we arrived," Thompson said. "It sounded like a pretty good-sized gathering."
