The Brainerd Warriors girls' soccer team had high expectations going into this season, but Thursday it looked as if it had reverted to its previous ways.
In a Central Lakes Conference game against the St. Cloud Tech Tigers, Brainerd could do nothing right and the score, 6-0, reflected that.
Brainerd managed just two shots on goal and was repeatedly beaten to loose balls. While the Tigers were under control and running plays, Brainerd was just running.
"Tech really played a nice game," said Kohan. "We practiced really strong all week and I told the girls at halftime to go do what we practiced and we didn't.
"I didn't have much to say to them then and I don't have much to say now, just that we go to Grand Rapids (today) and I hope they settle down, regroup and get organized. I thought we were going to play better, but we have a long way to go."
Kate Bjornson was busy keeping goal. She stopped 22 shots on goal, but was continually bombarded with Tiger attacks.
Those attacks turned into goals late in the first half and throughout the second as Tech made adjustments.
"The first 20 minutes we had trouble finishing and their offsides trap had something to do with that," Tech coach Eric Olson said, "but as soon as the second half came, we started to throw more balls to the sides and corners and made diagonal runs that fixed that."
Brainerd has never beaten Tech in five varsity seasons.
"We're pretty talented up front and if you're going to play an offsides trap against us you better be well organized back there," said Olson. "We just have too much individual talent up there that we're just going to beat you or our speed will.
"I don't think Brainerd played real organized back there and I think George will be the first to tell you that. Personally, I don't like the offsides trap because you're relying on the referee to make that call and at this level it's hard to get the line to all move at the same time and be as one unit."
