The Central Lakes College volleyball team learned a valuable lesson.
On Friday, the Raiders allowed the Vermilion Ironwomen to hang around in the first game far too long before finally finishing them off.
Against the Mesabi Range Lady Norse Saturday, CLC wasted little time with its undermanned opponent, throttling them 30-8 in the first game and winning the next two games 30-19, 30-19 to complete the sweep.
"We played a lot more relaxed and had a lot more fun," Raiders coach Jane Peterson said. "We also had a lot of aces. It was a pretty balanced attack and I feel a whole lot better about how we played."
Peterson also feels better about the way her team served, especially sophomore Dana tenCate. The Raiders had 19 ace serves with tenCate leading the way with a gaudy nine aces.
"I've never seen Dana serve like that with so few errors," said Peterson. "She's got a good, tough serve but she misses a lot. We talked about that and that's what's nice about this team is that you just point something out and they get it."
Once again the Raiders employed a balanced offensive attack to overpower the Lady Norse. Lane tenCate led CLC with 10 kills and Jillian Maki was a close second with seven. Courtney Stach added six kills and setter Amy Fleischhacker got into the act with five kills.
CLC's Shannon McCarthy was a force at the net as she collected seven blocks.
CLC 3, Mesabi 0
The key: Lane tenCate led the Raiders with 10 kills.
Next: at Northland, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday
But as Peterson points out, it's Fleischhacker's play that is making the Raiders go.
"We have all these athletic hitters but you know when you have a good team when nobody is talking about your setter," Peterson said. "Amy is really good but nobody is talking about her because our hitters are so athletic. She's the one that gets the ball to the hitters."
