Voss has visions of state

AREA ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Megan Voss does not possess the ideal swimmer's body.

That hasn't stopped the Little Falls Flyers senior from making waves.

After helping the 200-yard medley relay team to a first-place time of 2:04.45, Voss won the 200 individual medley in 2:28.72.

Right after that she captured the 100 backstroke in 1:10.05, helping the 200 freestyle relay to a 1:45.91 winning time.

The six-year varsity veteran's four firsts helped Little Falls defeat Alexandria 100-81 Sept. 3.

"She's very smooth and streamline," said Flyers head coach Tim Corbett. "She really has worked hard at being very streamline on her starts and turns. She's just a hard-worker."

During a triangular Tuesday, Voss won the medley in 2.29.51 the backstroke in 1:09.77 and helped the 200 free relay to first as the Flyers finished second behind Sauk Centre and ahead of Albany.

Voss is pleased with her early season times.

"I actually am surprised at where I'm at," said the point guard for the Flyer girls' basketball team. "I'm starting faster than what I finished with last year. I want to get my backstroke time down to 1:04. That's the state qualifying time."

Voss is no stranger to swimming fast.

She was part of the Flyers' 200 freestyle relay that placed sixth in the Class 1A state meet with a 1:41.03. The squad, made up of Whitney Weisz, Voss, Brittany Then and Molly Binger, swam a school-record 1:40.66 in the prelims.

The senior was also part of the state 400 free relay that captured 11th place with a time of 3:45.32. That team consisted of Weisz, Voss, Carlee Davich and Binger.

It was the third state meet for Voss in the 200 relay.

Sport: Swimming and diving

Position: Individual medley, backstroke, relays

Key stat: Captured four firsts in dual with Alexandria

"We're missing Molly from that relay, but their goal is to get there and go faster," said Corbett. "What's neat about this year is that the girls are really going after those individual events, too. While it's no gimme, Megan is really striving to make the state cut in the backstroke. That's driving her.

"The girls are going so hard in their stroke events that the freestyle will just improve with it."

Having had a taste of state competition the last three seasons, Voss wants nothing more than to finish her career at the final meet of the season. While that's her main goal, she's also doing her part to make sure the season as a whole is a success.

"We have 10 seniors on the team and the leadership we're getting from those girls is tremendous," Corbett said. "They are really taking the bull by the horns and making sure they have a good year this season. Megan is one of our four captains and she's definitely leading the charge with that."

This despite being one of the shorter athletes on the squad.

"I don't think about my size," said Voss. "I just swim."
