MINOT, N.D. (AP) -- A school bus collided with a semitrailer, sending both onto their sides and killing the bus driver. All three children aboard the bus were hospitalized.
The truck, carrying concrete culverts on a flatbed, was traveling on U.S. Highway 83 about five miles south of Minot on Thursday when it hit the front of the bus as the bus tried to cross the highway at an intersection, Highway Patrol Capt. Greg Sinclair said.
Witnesses said the 60-year-old bus driver was pinned under the bus. He was not immediately identified by the highway patrol.
The semi's driver, who was not injured, pulled children from the wreckage, witnesses said.
Two girls remained in a hospital intensive care unit Friday in fair condition, officials said. The third student, a boy, was transferred to a hospital out of state, a Trinity Hospital nursing supervisor said. She declined to say why the child was transferred or name the hospital, citing privacy rules.
Bell Elementary School Principal Rich Solberg said he believed all three children would recover.
