Katie Brown, an 18-year-old from Pine River-Backus High School, and Vernell Roberts of Wadena are among 32 drag racers from Brainerd International Raceway who will head to Bandimere Speedway in Denver this weekend for the NHRA Summit Racing Series West Central Division.
Brown will compete in the high school division and Roberts in the Bike/Snowmobile class.
Last year, the BIR team walked away from Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan., with the first-place trophy by accumulating more points than the other 17 teams that represented tracks from throughout the National Hot Rod Association's West Central Division, which encompasses Minnesota, Iowa, North and South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, western Wisconsin, Ontario and Manitoba.
They will race in one of five classes. The individual winner in each class earns the chance to compete in the NHRA Auto Club of Southern California Finals at Pomona, Calif., in November against champions of the other six NHRA divisions.
