LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Oprah Winfrey will be the first to receive the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award to be given at the 54th annual Emmys.
Bryce Zabel, chief executive of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, described Winfrey as a "truly qualified individual ... whose deeds and actions have had a lasting impact on society."
The award was established this year and will be presented by Tom Hanks at the Sept. 22 ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium.
Whitney Houston summoned
MENDHAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) -- Whitney Houston was issued a summons for violating New Jersey's water-use restrictions after police found sprinklers running at her estate.
"Nobody gets special treatment here," police Lt. Jim Hughes told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Tuesday's editions.
State officials imposed water-use restrictions last month because of ongoing drought conditions.
A spokeswoman said Houston and her husband Bobby Brown weren't home when the sprinklers were on.
Stephanopoulos is new dad
WASHINGTON (AP) -- George Stephanopoulos and his wife, Alexandra Wentworth, are the proud parents of 6-pound, 9-ounce Elliot Wentworth Stephanopoulos, born Monday morning at Sibley Memorial Hospital.
Former Clinton adviser Stephanopoulos, who has been working for ABC News, makes his debut Sunday morning as the anchor of ABC News's "This Week."
QVC sues former host
WEST CHESTER, Pa. (AP) -- Electronic retailer QVC is suing a former host who moved to the Home Shopping Network, saying she violated her contract by e-mailing QVC viewers about promotions at her new station.
QVC Inc. filed suit against Kathy L. Levine, who was a star host on the network for 13 years. The suit, filed Friday, says Levine exploited confidential customer information.
