Crow Wing County Sheriff's Deputy Eric Klang's strong showing in the race for Crow Wing County sheriff even surprised him. He said Tuesday night he expected to finish slightly behind incumbent Sheriff Dick Ross.
He topped Ross 2,932-2 ,713 or 42 percent to 36 percent. Ross' challenger, four years ago, Keith Emerson also was listed on the ballot but he withdrew from the race earlier. Emerson garnered 658 votes or 10 percent.
"I've had an opportunity to talk to quite a few people," Klang said. "Everyone echoed the same thing for me. ... It's time for a change."
The political newcomer had billboards up at two sites and credited sign location as one way he was able to overcome his initial low name recognition.
"I need to get my name out there so everybody gets to see it," he said. "The next thing I want to do is I want to hit the street and do the door-to-door."
Ross could not be reached at home or at the Law Enforcement Center this morning.
