STAPLES -- The No. 1 ranked Staples-Motley boys' cross country team took a back seat for the first time in more than a year as they placed second and the Cardinal girls' took third at their own invitational Saturday.
The boys' teams from Pierz and Pequot Lakes came in eighth and ninth, respectively.
The Cardinals' Jeff Brever placed fifth with a time of 17:41, Pequot's David Schwen took 21st place with 19:04, and Pierz's Scott Fischer came in 22nd with a time of 19:06.
For the girls, Brittany Brenny of Staples-Motley was fifth with 16:40. Cardinal Liza Milless came in sixth with a time of 16:42, and Stacy Britz of Pierz was seventh at 16:49.
"There were a couple of great girls' teams there, but our girls ran fantastic," said Staples-Motley coach Gene Mattila. "The boys ran well also. Our No. 2 runner, Jacob Huebsch, has almost caught up with his teammate Jeff Brever in his times."

Wadena girls' finish third
DECORAH -- The Wadena-Deer Creek girls' cross-country team placed fourth with 170 points and the Wolverines' boys' team placed 15th with 335 points at the Iowa City Invitational Saturday.
Katie Lorentz and Kourtney Anderson placed in the top 20, in 18th and 19th places, respectively. Adam Asfeld took third place among the boys with a time of 26:25.
"Our girls did a really nice job. This was super competition against a nationally rated team -- Iowa City West," said W-DC coach Terry Olson. "For the boys, Adam Asfeld did outstanding, placing in a field like that."
