Donald W. Gates, 70, Brainerd, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at St. Joseph's Medical Center of Brainerd.
He was born July 21, 1930, in Robbinsdale to Seallum and Gladys (McPhetridge) Gates. He served in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Rochester during the Korean War from May 1948 to October 1952. He married Darlene Malloy on Oct. 3, 1953, in Brainerd. He retired from Potlatch and was a past president of the Pulp and Sulphite Local No. 79. He also worked as a road supervisor for Crow Wing County and as a supervisor for Long Lake Township. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, VFW Post No. 1647 and American Legion Post No. 255 of Brainerd and Local No. 79.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Julianne Layman, Killeen, Texas, Janeen Anderson, St. Francis, and Janelle Gates, Maple Grove; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Will Gates, Meade, Wash.; and a sister, Marean Smedley, Jacksonville, Fla.
His parents and two brothers, Jerry and Jim Gates, died earlier.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Karl Galik officiating. Burial will be Minnesota State Veteran's Cemetery of Camp Ripley with military gravesite rites by the VFW Post No. 1647 of Brainerd.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home of Brainerd and an hour before services at the church.
