Jim Grossman has been hired as assistant sports editor of The Brainerd Dispatch.
Grossman, 49, is a graduate of St. Paul Highland Park High School and Augsburg College and is working on his master's degree at College of St. Katherine's in St. Paul.
Grossman has previous experience in a variety of communication media including marketing communications, journalism and editorial writing.
Haglin opens office in LF
LITTLE FALLS -- Jon Haglin is the new district representative for Lutheran Brotherhood financial services and has opened an office on East Broadway.
Haglin attended high school in Staples and graduated from St. Cloud State University. He worked in St. Paul for the past five years.
CLC offers computer short courses
Central Lakes College, Brainerd, has arranged short courses of limited length and class size to meet public demand for training in specific programs. The courses are scheduled by the Customized Training Program of the External Studies Department in the Business and Industry Center on the Brainerd campus.

Hoese opens second office in Little Falls
LITTLE FALLS -- Charles Hoese opened his new Aid Association for Lutherans office on First Street.
This is Hoese's second office and will serve Lutherans in Morrison County. Hoese also serves Lutherans in Benton and Stearns County with an office in St. Cloud for the past 11 years.
Russell and Herder wins national award
Russell and Herder, an advertising and public relations firm based in Brainerd, received a certificate of commendation at the Public Relations Society of America's Bronz Anvil Awards for a series of three direct mail pieces developed for Bemidji State University.
The series, called The Edge, was developed for high school juniors and was one of 1,001 entries, 86 of which received recognition.
The nation's largest association for public relations professionals, PRSA has been awarding Bronze Anvil awards since 1969 in order to recognize organizations for their public relations tactics.
Training center announces special courses
The Lakes Area Training Center at the Brainerd Regional Human Services Center is offering two courses for health care professionals and paraprofessionals.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Fetal Alcohol Effects will be presented from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Sept. 26. Participants will learn the difference between FAS and FAE, how to identify children and adults with these conditions, how to work with them and how the community can help decrease the number of children born with FAS/FAE. There is no cost to attend, but pre-registration is required by Wednesday.
The second course is DISCUS screening for Tardive Dyskinesia and will be presented from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 28. The training is designed for licensed clinical professionals authorized by their employer to conduct a DISCUS screening. Training includes definition of risk factors and symptoms. Following successful completion of the training, consultants are available to complete reliability checks with participants at their work sites. Registration is $50 and pre-registration is required by Sept. 21.
