American Legion Auxiliary
Area residents recently attended the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary National Conventions in San Antonio, Texas. Norm Nelson, Terry Nelson, and Dan Schoonover represented Minnesota as delegates to the American Legion National Convention. Shirley Schoonover and Kris Nelson represented Minnesota as delegates and Sarah Nelson as a guest of the American Legion Auxiliary Convention. Invited guests included Jim Degado, Secretary of the Department of Voluntary Services, Department Affairs Secretaty, the Honorable Anthony Principi; John Schneider and Merlin Olson, of Children's Miracle Network. President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush also addressed both conventions. State President Kris Nelson of Brainerd was installed as a member of the National organization.
National awards won by area residents were: Unit Poppy Award Contest Shirley Hauck of Unit 255 Brainerd; Ione Kubby National Security Award Kris Nelson; Dorothy Pearl Civil Preparedness Award Kris Nelson; and Department National Security Award Kris Nelson.

Lakes and Woods Horticultural Club
The Lakes and Woods Horticultural will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the Mille Lacs Electric Cooperative meeting room at Aitkin. Barbara Gans, the Club President, will be presenting the evening's program, Lilies of Minnesota. She will also include information about the local lily society, proper soil for lilies, etc. with her slide presentation.
The Garden Club is affiliated with the Minnesota State Horticultural Society. A short business meeting and brief sharing time will precede Ms. Gans presentation. VFW Firearm safety classes

The Brainerd chapter of Kiwanis International will hold its first annual all-Kiwanis picnic from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Brainerd Kiwanis Park. Members of Brainerd Kiwanis clubs and their families, including the Brainerd Golden K, Key Club and Builder's Club are welcome. Lunch will be provided.
Woodland harvest supper and quilt show
Woodland Good Samaritan Village will celebrate its 5th annual harvest supper and quilt show Thursday. The quilt show will be from 2-8 p.m. and the harvest show will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Those attending can enjoy barbecued chicken, baked beans, sweet corn, harvest salad, fresh baked bread and apple pie topped with cinnamon ice cream. Cost: $10 for adults and $5 for children 8 years old and under.
Tickets/reservations available at the nursing home front office and apartment office or tickets may be purchased at the door. A raffle will also be available for a chance to win a 13 inch TV/VCR combination.
Money raised from this event will go toward a piano for Woodland's chapel.

Mulligan stew luncheon benefit
The Family of Christ School is having a mulligan stew luncheon benefit beginning at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 16 at the school, 2711 Woida Rd. N., Baxter. Stew, buns, crackers, dessert and beverages will be available. Cost: Adults, $4; children 12 and under, $2. Take home a container, $2 a scoop.

Motorcycle "Ride for Hospice"
The 6th annual "Ride for Unity Family Hospice" will be Saturday. The ride will start at the Red Bull Bar in Little Falls with registration from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. A donation of $5 per person is requested. Bikers will travel from the Red Bull to Capp's Family Dining in Hillman and then return to the Red Bull at approximately 4 p.m. for food, fun, prize giveaways, an auction and conversation. Co-chairs for the event are Jack Fure, Scott Nagle and Ken Oechsle.

Pequot Lakes Historical Society garage and mum sale
The Pequot Lakes Historical Society is having their 1st annual garage sale, along with their 4th annual mum sale from 4:30-8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Senior Citizen/Historical Society Building. Donations are being accepted except clothing. All objects must be clean, usable and in good, working order. The fundraiser is to help in the cost of new flooring in the basement of the Senior Citizens Building, where the Historical Society is housed. No artifacts from the historical collection will be sold at the garage sale.

55 Alive Driver class
