The time of decision is at hand. Tomorrow voters in Minnesota will go to the polls to narrow down the fields of candidates. In Crow Wing County there are a number of candidates for each of the three commissioner districts and also for the county judgeship. In Brainerd the primary has additional significance because of the Dial-A-Ride bus question.
30 years ago (1970)
The St. Joseph's Hospital Fund Drive has gone over the top. The total today stands at more than $550,000. The goal was $500,000. The drive saw the community of Brainerd stand behind its hospital, operated by the Benedictine Sisters, not once, but twice.
40 years ago (1960)
The shortest primary ballots in years will face voters here next Tuesday. In Brainerd, interest in the election probably will be centered on a city bond issue. City residents are to vote on a $35,000 bond issue for improving the fire department.
60 years ago (1940)
Joe Gustafson led the shooters in the classes above 150 birds at Uncle Tom's Trap Shoot Sunday. Paul Read broke 23x25 to lead the Singles event.
80 years ago (1920)
-- The Brainerd Ice Co. broke a wagon while attempting to navigate through heavy ruts on some southside streets.
-- C.M. Bakken, clarinet player in the New Park Theatre, is employed as a barber at the Ransford Billiard Shop.
100 years ago (1900)
Sievert Blum has purchased two lots on Forest Road and is hauling stone and lumber for a nice two-story house. We think it looks very suspicious.
