(Photo) California native Dwight Brooks makes some sail adjustments on Atlantic, a 10-1/2 foot, 157-pound replica of the 1905 record-setting sailing schooner. Brooks, a summer resident of the Pine Beach Peninsula on Gull Lake, spent 1,500 hours on it.
40 years ago (1969)
Armed robbers held up the Clark gas station at the intersection of Eighth and Washington Streets early this morning, making off with $368 and leaving station attendant Mike Dieter tied up. The men brandished pistols and had nylons over their heads.
60 years ago (1949)
The special campaign to raise funds for the battle against polio in Crow Wing County and across the nation will begin September 8. Local chairman, John Chalberg, announced that the county goal will be $4,000. Polio hospitalization costs $11 per day.
80 years ago (1929)
Unless other action is taken the Northern Pacific's Old Iron Horse yard engine will be retired, dismantled, and its iron sold for $500. In its 33 years of service it has covered 619,940 miles at the hand of Engineer John Headman.
100 years ago (1909)
Odran Fritz, official photographer of the Northern Pacific and of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific railway systems, was in Brainerd and left for Crosslake to take photos of the old Cross Lake logging railroad.
