Outdoor News

LAKE MILLE LACS

East - A few walleyes continue to be taken on crankbaits in 12 feet or on live-bait rigs and leeches on the deep gravel bars during the day. At night, slip bobbers and leeches are the way to go on the 22- to 30-foot gravel areas. Muskie action is slow, but smallmouths are on the rocks in 10 to 12 feet.

West - The 12- to 15-foot rocks are holding numbers of big smallmouths. Muskie action is poor, but you will hook pike along the weedlines in most bays. The walleye bite has been slightly slower during the day. The anglers pulling crankbaits and covering a lot of water tend to do best. At night, slip bobbers and leeches remain the best option for walleyes off the mud flats in 30 feet or more.

LAKE OF THE WOODS

Incredible walleye numbers are being pulled from just outside the Gap to Little Oak. West of Garden_Island, downrigging has produced walleyes in 25 to 30 feet. Hammered gold spinner rigs continue to dominant the action.

LEECH LAKE

A jig and minnow is turning walleyes in the six- to eight-foot weeds of Steamboat Bay and Sucker Bay. Crawlers and leeches are working best in 10 to 14 feet in the Meadows and Goose Flats areas. Live-bait rigs and leeches continue to work on the deep structure along the south end as well. Muskie action has been strong on the rocks near Pelican_Island and Submarine Island and bass are an easy catch in the slop, reeds, and rice beds. Work the weeds in Portage Bay with minnows for perch.

LAKE MINNETONKA AREA

On Lake Minnetonka, topwater baits are producing bass on the shorelines out to the first weedline and spinnerbaits or sucker minnows are triggering northern pike on top of the 12-foot weeds. Jigs and leeches are producing an occasional walleye on the weedlines of Minnetonka and sunfish remain an easy catch. On Lake Sarah, slip bobbers and minnows started turning crappies in 10 to 12 feet.

RAINY LAKE

A jig and minnow is providing the best walleye action on the Saginaw Reefs in 32 to 36 feet or in the American_Narrows in 30 to 40 feet. The weedlines in Lost Bay are giving up northern pike via crankbaits and the biggest smallmouth bass are being found on the deep reefs.

LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH

A jig and minnow pitched in the eight- to 11-foot weeds is producing walleyes off Little Stoney Point and the Duck Pass. The main-lake bite has been tough. Trolling spoons on the west side weedlines is the best option for northern pike. Perch are being found at the mouth of the river in less than 10 feet or on the rock hump off Raven's Point in 14 feet.

BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA

Walleye action has improved on Gull Lake and Pelican Lake in 20 to 28 feet during the day and in 16 to 20 feet during low-light periods. Lindy Rigs and redtails have been the most productive presentation. Bass are hitting spinnerbaits and northern pike are hitting sucker minnows along the deep and shallow weedlines of Lake Hubert, North Long Lake, and Gull. Panfish action remains strong in the weeds of most lakes.

CROSS LAKE AREA

The walleye bite on the Whitefish Chain and most surrounding lakes remains good with leeches or redtails in 18 to 24 feet. Bass and northern pike continue to be taken with spinnerbaits or sucker minnows on the outside weed edges. Look for crappies to be suspended over 14 feet and most active early and late in the day.

HACKENSACK AREA

A jig and minnow or crawler rig is producing walleyes at Woman Lake in 14 to 22 feet. Pike action also has improved on the weedlines of Woman. Look to Birch Lake and Pleasant Lake for panfish in 12 to 25 feet, while largemouth and smallmouth bass continue to be active on all area lakes.
