RICE -- David C. Gunther, 53, Rice, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at St. Cloud Hospital.
He was born Jan. 9, 1949, in Little Falls to Walter and LaVern (Hoheisel) Gunther. The family moved to Jamestown, N.D., in 1950 and returned to Pierz in 1960 and graduated from Pierz High School in 1967. He served in the Navy until his discharge in 1970 and in the Naval Reserve from 1970 to 1974. He enlisted in the Minnesota Army National Guard in 1974 and was assigned to Headquarters Starc Detachment-2 as a sergeant. He attended Dunwoody Industrial Institute in Minneapolis from 1970, graduating in 1972 with a degree in refrigeration. He married Ilona M. Pietrzykowski on July 15, 1972, in Little Falls. They lived in Rice where he delivered propane gas for more than 25 years in St. Cloud and surrounding areas. He was a member of the Rice Sportsman's Club.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Tina Gunther, Rice, and Tanya Middendorf, Melrose; a son, Timothy Gunther, Rice; mother, Pierz; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Sherry Dehler, Zimmerman, and Holly Gunther, Foley.
His father, and an infant brother, died earlier.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Pierz with the Rev. Gerald Dalseth officiating. Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veteran's Cemetery. Military rites will be preformed by David's unit from Camp Ripley.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today and from 8-10:15 a.m. Friday at the Shelley-Virnig Funeral Chapel in Pierz.
