Doll artist from Brainerd earns grand prize at national convention

Local doll artist Sally Simpson was awarded one of the most prestigious honors in the field of fashion design for dolls.

Simpson received the grand prize in the recent Alexandra Fairchild Ford (Alex) Doll Design Contest at the Madame Alexander Doll Club convention Aug. 23-25 in Boston.

Convention attendees estimated at 600 were invited to participate in the voting process to select 10 finalists. The 10 finalists were then judged by designers from The Alexander Doll Co. for originality, creativity, accuracy, craftsmanship and overall presentation. The grand prize included a collection of Alex dolls and wardrobe. The estimated retail value of the grand prize is $1,000. The original design submitted by Simpson may also be considered for future production by the Alexander Doll Co.

Simpson has lived in Brainerd since 1988. She works for the In-Fisherman Communications Network for the Professional Walleye Trail.
