BROOKSTON (AP) -- A woman whose body was found in this northern Minnesota city was a victim of homicide, authorities said.
The woman's identity had not been released as of Monday evening, but police believe she was a 33-year-old resident of the Fond du Lac Indian reservation southwest of Duluth.
Her body was found Sunday along a road.
Police didn't release a cause of death, but Lt. Rick Swanson of the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said Monday that she died of "great violence."
No arrests have been made, but police say they are pursuing leads.
Midwestern legislators to meet in Minneapolis
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The Midwestern Legislative Conference, a professional organization for legislators in 11 Midwestern states, will meet in Minneapolis for four days, starting Sunday.
About 600 legislators and their families are expected to attend, according to Minnesota state Sen. John Hottinger, DFL-Mankato, the current chairman of the organization.
Topics of discussion for the conference include how trends in science and technology may affect public policy, interstate rail service in the Midwest, Internet sales taxation, the economics of 21st century agriculture and the states' roles in regulating genetically modified organisms.
Star Tribune endorses Ciresi
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The Star Tribune of Minneapolis has endorsed trial lawyer Mike Ciresi in the DFL primary race to challenge incumbent Republican Rod Grams for U.S. Senate.
The paper says Ciresi, whose firm helped Minnesota win its landmark settlement with the tobacco industry, offers DFLers a chance to send into the general election campaign a world-renowned defender of ordinary people against special-interest abuse.
"He is a quick study, a nimble strategist and an impressive debater," the paper said Tuesday. "He exudes competence and confidence."
The paper said it was evident in the beginning of his campaign that Ciresi, 54, is making his first bid for public office. "But Ciresi has come on strong," the paper said. "He has done his homework, and now may be the best-informed."
