20 years ago (1990)

Acting from within its 1,000 square foot facility, the Baxter City Council voted to put the question of a new city hall to the voters. A committee chaired by Mayor Don O'Brien recommended voters decide whether to bond for $400,000 to build a new facility.

30 years ago (1980)

(Photo) Three Burlington-Northern Railroad employees retired recently with a combined 119 years in railroad experience. They are Lester (Dop) Lind, sheet metal worker; Eugene Austin and Francis Koering, both carman welders.

40 years ago (1970)

Mrs. Mabel McMillan, 64, is planning to walk from her home in Ironton to Arkansas, a distance she estimates at 1,300 miles. She will leave shortly after Labor Day, accompanied by a pony and a small dog. Her longest previous walk was 700 miles.

60 years ago (1950)

Duard Hicks learned what "two-time loser" means over the weekend. Brainerd police halted Hicks, charged him with careless driving and said to report to court today. Hicks left the police station and was stopped by the state police. Charge? Careless driving.

80 years ago (1930)

The actual construction work on a new $11,000 filling station for Cities Service was begun today at the corner of Sixth and Norwood Streets. The building will be finished in black and white with a black and white checked roof.

100 years ago (1910)

The closing on many northern Minnesota saloons by the government on account of selling liquor to Indians by saloon keepers and bootleggers could cause the city of Brainerd to be put in the dry column. The Treaty of 1855 includes Crow Wing County.
