20 years ago (1989)

Ken Carpenter's new sailboat, Hi Yawl, is as friendly as its name. Five and one-half years in the making, she is unlike anything on Pelican Lake. She is exactly what her name implies - a yawl. Building her was tougher than his doctoral thesis; it took 3-1/2 years.

30 years ago (1979)

Finding a judge to preside over Brainerd's upcoming fluoride hearing is apparently not going to be easy. Supreme Court officials thought they had a candidate in Judge Charles Barnes of Duluth, but he was later disqualified.

40 years ago (1969)

(Photo) Al Lindner, of the Nisswa Guides, showed his parents, the Art Lindners of Chicago, how Paul Bunyan Vacationland walleyes take to nightcrawlers and Lindy Rigs. This fine stringer came out of Whitefish Lake.

60 years ago (1949)

Back to the gridiron yesterday came husky youngsters anxious to put added conditioning to their bodies before the beginning of a stiff season. Thirty-five candidates reported to coach Warren Kasch at Gregory Park to begin preliminary training on a hot day.

100 years ago (1909)

There were three Weary Willies in municipal court this morning. One pleaded not guilty to vagrancy and his hearing is this afternoon. Two were found guilty of drunkenness and fined $10 or ten days. This was suspended so they could leave town.
