Haberman to start at QB for St. Olaf

John Haberman, a 2006 Brainerd High School graduate, will be the starting quarterback at St. Olaf College when the Oles open their season 1 p.m. at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Haberman ran for 372 yards and six touchdowns last year. He backed up Matt Penz, who has graduated, for the last two seasons.

First-year head coach Jerry Olszewski and the Oles open at home Sept. 13 against Pacific Lutheran.

Jared Mueller, a 2007 BHS graduate, is scheduled to see playing time at wide receiver for the Oles this season.

JV girls' soccer wins

The Brainerd Warrior girls' junior varsity soccer team beat St. Cloud Tech 2-1 on Tuesday.

Stacy Tetreault scored in the first half and Molly Palm scored in the second, assisted by Alese Waters.

The Warriors outshot the Tigers 25-5. Goalkeeper Brooke Nelson had four saves.

Brainerd (1-1) hosts Willmar at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Whalen to speak to boosters club

Brainerd Warrior girls' tennis coach Marnie Whalen will be the speaker at the Brainerd Sports Boosters Club meeting, which begins at noon Thursday at the Moose Lodge.

Kelly Rosenthal, the Warrior Athlete of the Week, will be honored.

Tech defeats JV boys

St. Cloud Tech defeated Brainerd 3-0 in junior varsity boys' soccer Tuesday.

Matt Benson was Brainerd's keeper in the first half, stopping 11 of 12 shots. In the second half keeper Thor Linnerooth stopped seven of nine shots. Brainerd had four shots on net the first half and four the second.

Conference honors Flyers

Grant Bell and Sami Koester of Little Falls have been named Central Lakes Conference performers of the week ending Aug. 30.

In boys' soccer, Bell scored four goals and had one assist last week.

In girls' tennis, Koester won two of three matches at No. 2 singles in straight sets last week.

Adult pond hockey league to form

The Brainerd Parks and Recreation Department is forming an adult pond hockey league this winter.

Participants must be at least 30-years-old as of Jan. 1, 2009.

Games will begin Jan. 7 and continue through Feb. 18, weather permitting. Games will be played at the Mill Avenue Park skating rink, starting at 6:30 p.m., on Wednesdays.

Teams will consist of a maximum of six players, with four players on the ice from each team. Checking is not allowed. Games will be self-officiated. Players must wear helmets; other protective gear is optional, but highly recommended.

There are no goaltenders. Pond hockey goals will be provided.

Cost is $60 per team. Registration deadline is Dec. 19.

Frisbee disc golf tournament Saturday

The Brainerd Parks and Recreation Department will host a Frisbee disc golf tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Lum Park Frisbee golf course.

This is a 36-hole tournament. Divisions include juniors, men's and women's pro, men's and women's amateur and masters 35 and up.

Registration fee is $15 with T-shirt, $10 without shirt. Registration will be accepted before the event at 9 a.m. at the parks and recreation office in Lum Park.

Contestants must furnish their own equipment.
