Buckman Class C runner-up

MIESVILLE -- The Watkins Clippers denied Buckman its second state title in three years by rallying to defeat the Billygoats 6-5 in the Class C state amateur baseball championship game Monday.

Buckman led 5-4 after four innings. Watkins scored solo runs in the fifth and seventh to capture the title.

In the seventh, Watkins' Chad Hess was hit by a Scott Geiger pitch. Todd Geislinger walked and Eric Malvin singled in the game-winning run.

Bruce Geislinger notched his fourth tournament win and was awarded the most valuable player trophy. Geislinger gave up nine hits in eight innings, five earned runs, walked three and struck out six. Tom Frericks pitched a perfect ninth to save the game for Watkins.

Chris Hoheisel was 3-for-5 with an RBI for Buckman. Todd Robinson was also 3-for-5 with three RBI and Shawn Fischer was 2-for-3 with a double for the Billygoats.

Hess hit a two-run homer in the Watkins first and a game-tying solo home run in the fifth. Jon Thielen homered in the third to put Watkins ahead 3-1.

In the Buckman fourth, singles by Fischer, Hoheisel and Robinson gave the Billygoats a 5-4 edge.

The Billygoats' Scott Geiger, Scott Boser, Fischer and Hoheisel made the all-tournament team.

MIESVILLE -- The Billygoats advanced to the championship game for the second time in three years as Todd Robinson went 2-for-5, Scott Geiger 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI and Joe Nelson 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the eighth and two RBI.

Nelson went the distance, striking out two in the ninth to gain the victory. He struck out nine, walked four and gave up six earned runs and 14 hits.

Buckman went ahead in the first on a three-run double by Scott Boser.

MIESVILLE -- Watkins hit five home runs to power its way into the finals and push Buckman into the losers' bracket.

Bruce Geislinger hit a solo shot in the third, Eric Malvin hit two-run homers in the fourth and sixth, Jon Thielen homered in the sixth and Todd Geislinger added a two-run drive in the seventh.

Scott Geiger homered and had two RBI for Buckman and Dave Woitalla was 3-for-5 with two RBI.

Saturday's Game

St. Patrick 8, Sobieski 2

RED WING -- Steve Tupy's grand slam in the second and Jamey Strand's five-hit complete game helped the Irish eliminate the Skis.

Troy Olson was 1-for-4 with an RBI for Sobieski.

Strand struck out four, walked three and gave up five hits and no earned runs.

Losing pitcher Brad Czech gave up seven earned runs and 14 hits in a complete game for Sobieski.
