ST. PAUL (AP) -- A man was shot and killed by police Monday night after he allegedly stabbed an officer, police said.
Officers were called to a domestic dispute around 11 p.m. and were handcuffing a 19-year-old man when he pulled away from them, picked up a bladed weapon and attacked an officer, according to a news release from the Police Department.
The officer was stabbed at least twice before the man who attacked him was shot by other officers, police said. The number of officers who fired their weapons and the number of times the man was shot were not immediately known.
Suspect, officer injured after police shooting
COON RAPIDS (AP) -- A police officer and a suspect were hospitalized Monday after the suspect allegedly tried to run the officer down with his car in this northwest Twin Cities suburb.
Police responded to a domestic disturbance call at the Camelot Square Apartments complex around noon. When they arrived, the suspect tried to escape in his vehicle, authorities said.
Coon Rapids Police Chief Steve Wells said the suspect, a 23-year-old man, started the car and officers tried to break the windows unsuccessfully. The suspect then drove the car directly at one of the officers, he said.
The 37-year-old officer jumped on the vehicle's hood, but the suspect would not stop the car, Wells said. The officer shot at least four times through the windshield, striking the suspect in the upper torso, he said.
Both the officer and the suspect were taken to Mercy Hospital. The officer sustained a concussion and a broken left arm along with cuts and bruises. The suspect was upgraded from critical to serious condition late Monday, said Mercy spokesman Vince Rivard.

Religion taking on labor issues
ST. PAUL (AP) -- Nearly 40 churches in the Twin Cities invited union leaders into their worship services as part of the annual Labor in the Pulpit weekend.
At the same time, many other Christian, Jewish and Muslim congregations spent part of their services on workplace justice topics, challenging congregations to work for economic justice.
"We've forgotten how much common ground there is between labor and the religious community," said Shar Knutson, president of the St. Paul Area Trades and Labor Assembly. "The Bible is full of references of how you treat workers, the poor and the oppressed.
