Heartland Poets, a chapter of the League of Minnesota Poets, will meet from 5:30-8 p.m. Sept. 10 in the small room of the Brainerd Public Library.
After a brief business meeting, poets will share their poems in progress. Participants are asked to bring copies for others. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Double Fiddles to perform at Wild Rice Days
MCGREGOR - Two internationally acclaimed fiddlers, Scotland's Iain MacGillivray and Celtic fiddler Chuck Butler, will perform with their band Double Fiddles on Saturday as part of McGregor's Wild Rice Days.
Double Fiddles brings to life the energetic traditional Celtic music of Scotland, Cape Breton (Nova Scotia) and Ireland with unique double-fiddling, bagpipes, whistle and song. They are joined by Jim Ofsthun and Sue Spencer, who add their versatile instrumental skills and vocal talents to bring new life to traditional songs.
Performances by Double Fiddles will be at 11 a.m. and at 1 p.m. at the Pine Rail Bandshell in McGregor.
Astronaut Jones, aka Tony Costa, will perform his originals and a select group of covers Friday at The Beanery in Aitkin.
CLC Community Band kicks off fall season
The Central Lakes College Community Band will begin its fall season with the first rehearsal at 7 p.m. Monday in the Rehearsal Hall (E471) on the Brainerd campus.
Rehearsals will continue on the following Mondays - Sept. 20, Oct. 4, 11, 18, and 25 and Nov. 1 and 8. The fall concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in Chalberg Theater.
Membership for the community band is open to brass, woodwind and percussion players from high school juniors and seniors through CLC students and adult musicians.

Mixed media exhibit at CLC through Sept. 23
"Let Me Tell You a Story" mixed media exhibit by Amy Rice will be at the Central Lakes College Gallery through Sept. 23. Admission is free.
Festival Latino planned Sept. 25
The eighth annual Festival Latino is scheduled from 1-4:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at Central Lakes College.
The event includes entertainment by Leo and Kathy Lara, Jose Velazquez and the Gonzalez Family and food by El Tequila for this Spanish and Latin American Studies scholarship fundraiser.
Music General dancers attend NYC workshop
Thirteen Music General dancers, along with eight parents and Music General instructors Amy Borash, Sue Kuhn, Alex Kuhn and Matt Capelle, spent a week in New York City July 28-Aug. 4 for Break The Floor's tap workshop SLIDE, directed by Mike Minery.
This is the seventh year that Music General students have attended the weeklong event of master classes with instructors Trish Minery, Anthony Morigerato, Gregg Russell, Emily Shoemaker and Lisa Zerebecki.
Each dancer learned two routines over the course of the week, which culminated with a "one night only" performance at the New World Stages Theatre to the live musical accompaniment of the Duke Ellington Orchestra.
In addition to the classes and performance, dancers enjoyed the sights of NYC and attended the Broadway shows "Mama Mia!" and "The Lion King."
Sylvia Borash and Megan Rodgers also took part in the tap solo competition. Borash, who competed against 11 other teen soloists, was the teen winner of the tap soloist scholarship competition, taking home a $700 scholarship.

Brainerd Author Campbell to sign books
Carol Joan Campbell of Brainerd sign copies of her book, "Webster and Me," from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Cattale's Books and Gifts, 609 Laurel Street, Brainerd.
Working her way through the dictionary, Campbell artfully chose her words, from A through Z, and crafted stories expressing the different facets of each word and its range of definitions and usages.
Senior dance slated Wednesday
A senior dance is planned from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday at Waukenabo, with entertainment by Andy and Stu.
Midnight Ride to perform over weekend
Midnight Ride will perform at 8 p.m. Friday at the Green Lantern, 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the Garrison VFW and 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Sunday at the Wolfhound in Emily.

Bluegrass/gospel concert planned Saturday
NISSWA - A community bluegrass/gospel concert featuring The Great Adventure Gospel Band from Braham is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at Living Savior Lutheran Church, Nisswa, 3.5 miles west of Schaefer's corner.
Weather permitting, the concert will be outdoors. Participants are welcome to bring a lawn chair. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be indoors.
The Great Adventure Band has performed at the Itasca Family Music Festival as well as for many other events.
A free-will offering will be received and complimentary refreshments will be served. Brats and pop will be available for a small charge prior to the concert, from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Fall colors reporting kicks off on DNR website
As it has in recent years, Minnesota state park staff will provide weekly updates on the progression of fall colors.
The fall colors reports, to be updated by noon every Thursday beginning Sept. 2, are posted on the DNR website at mndnr.gov. The information also is available by calling the DNR Information Center at (651) 296-6157 or toll-free at (888) 646-6367 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The reports will include percent of color change, peak color projections, flowers and grasses in bloom and the mix of colors people can expect to see.
