With one points race left on the 2003 schedule, drag racers competing in Brainerd International Raceway's Contingency Points Series slugged it out last weekend as they positioned themselves for the last race Sept. 26-28.
In most classes, those leading in points were nowhere to be found when the final pair squared off on the drag strip. Jimmy Paulson of Stacy was one of the few points leaders who found his way to the winners' circle.
No. 3 in points going into the weekend, Paulson defeated Dean Dubbin of Royalton in the finals of the Top Comp class and should go into the final race as No. 1 in points.
"I figure that I'll be about 300 points ahead going into the last race," said Paulson, who realizes everyone will be gunning for him next month.
Paulson doesn't expect to change anything for the final race and will go with what got him this far.
"The car's been running great so we'll just see what happens." he said.
The Super Comp and Super Gas classes were more typical results. Don Westra, of St. Cloud was sitting in 15th place before beating No. 7 Ed Shaughnessy of Coleraine in the finals of Super Comp.
Jim Laborde of Hibbing beat Butch Belair of Princeton in the Super Gas finals. Laborde was No. 26 in points and Belair was No. 20.
Westra entered the weekend tied for the points lead with Chris Bishop of Grand Rapids in the Super Gas class, but he lost in the first round while Bishop advanced to the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Westra shook up the points leaders in the Super Comp class.
"We lost a little ground in Super Gas, but we did well in Super Comp," said Westra, who runs different cars in those two classes. "We've had a pretty good year in both cars, so we look forward to finishing well in at least one of them."
The Super Pro and Pro classes were the most popular of the weekend, attracting 89 and 91 racers, respectively. Don Leisdon of Bloomington outlasted the Super Pro field as he defeated Paulson in the finals. Leisdon was No. 82 in the points race.
Pat Haubrich of New Ulm took home the Pro class hardware by defeating Rory Emmans of Dayton in the finals.
In the Bike One and Bike Two classes, Toby Giese of Big Lake nearly went home with two first-place trophies. He beat Jeff Lanoue of Zimmerman in the Bike One finals but left too early on the starting line and red-lighted in the Bike Two finals, losing to Donnie Durenburger of Dayton.
