Mass appeal Brainerd driver Dave Mass among the winners on last day of NCS season

BARROWS -- North Central Speedway ended its season with a bang Sunday as it hosted the Wissota sprint cars and the Mighty Ax Nationals.

The sprint cars didn't fail to disappoint and in the Dash for Cash, Dave Mass of Brainerd collected the pot. Jimmy Kouba and Loren Langerud rounded out the top three.

The Pure B feature was a clean race, and easily taking the checkered flag was Kelly Kautz of Brooklyn Park, followed by Doug Cyrus and Dave Read.

The Midwest Modified feature was about as exciting a finish as one could hope for. Troy Jordan roared to an early lead while Dick Peterson, after starting in the sixth row, made an effort to get on Jordan's bumper. As the two went into turn four, Peterson made his move toward the inside of the turn and appeared to have grabbed the lead from Jordan.

They roared down the homestretch side by side and it was Jordan taking the checkered by the slimmest of margins. Scott Blood of Baxter took third.

The Street Stock feature was marred by six re-starts, perhaps due to the large field of 24 cars. Shawn Wageman of Pine River was able to avoid ever losing his hold on the lead, and came away with the win to claim his golden ax trophy. Jason Vandekamp and Brad Dwyer finished 2-3.

In the Super stock feature Brad Jensen of Brainerd took the lead in the seventh lap and never let go. Season points champion Kurt Loftis steadily improved his position from the third row to take second. Third-place honors went to Jeremy Kerzman.

The Sprint feature was the marquee event of the night, and after a salute to Wissota fans the sprints roared into action.

Scott Butz of Fargo, N.D., jumped off to an early lead and made quick work of the field until a re-start brought everyone together. Loren Langerud of Harwood, N.D., then made his move and never looked back. Langerud ate up the track lap after lap until a late re-start brought him back into the sights of Butz, now running second.

It didn't seem to bother Langerud as he took the checkered flag followed by Butz and third-place John Nelson of Shoreview.

Brainerd's Dave Mass finished eighth while Sye Anderson was 18th. Tim Johnson, in his first weekend in a sprint car, was knocked out of the running with car troubles.

NCS notes: The NCS banquet and awards ceremony will be Oct. 25 at the Brainerd Armory. Doors open at 5 p.m. If not sold out, tickets may be purchased at the door for $10.
