Deciding that the months-long strike at Larco Manufacturing was "not relevant" to the issue at hand, the Brainerd City Council voted 6-1 to give preliminary approval to a $1,100,000 industrial development revenue bond for the firm.

A check for $25,000 from Kerr Foundation in Oklahoma City, Okla. pushed the St. Joseph's Hospital fund drive over the $500,000 mark. The Kerr Foundation has been established by the family of the late Sen. Kerr of Oklahoma. The Kerrs have been longtime summer residents on Pelican Lake.
40 years ago (1960)
Dale Brown, 190-pound Junior fullback expected to be the special target of football defenses all around the Central Six Conference this fall, was elected co-captain of this year's team by his teammates. He'll co-captain the squad with Senior halfback Fred Dean.
60 years ago (1940)
An estimated 5,000 people watched the fireworks display at Roosevelt Field last night to climax one of the largest Labor Day celebrations ever held here yesterday. The celebration started with the nearly two-mile long parade at 10 o'clock.
80 years ago (1920)
Without any civic ceremonies of any kind, but nevertheless marking an epoch in Brainerd's history, the bars were taken down by the contractors and the new pavement paving on Kingwood Street opened to the public. In a minute the street swarmed with traffic.
100 years ago (1900)
