Habitat's 'Building on Faith Week' comes to lakes area

Posted: Friday, September 01, 2000

The Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity affiliate is sponsoring the first area "Building on Faith Week" Sept. 10-18. This event is a "blitz build," which calls upon many people from area churches, community organizations, building professions and others to erect the major parts of a house in one week.

For the past five years, Habitat for Humanity International has organized "Building on Faith Week," a fall event designed to encourage churches, community organizations and individuals all over the world to join together to simultaneously build houses.

The Brainerd and Baxter Lions Clubs are partnering with Lakes Area Habitat by providing volunteers and donating $6,000 from each chapter. An application has also been sent to the Lions Club International Foundation in hopes of receiving up to $25,000 in additional funds.

Goals to be accomplished during the week include completion of the foundation, walls, roof, interior walls, siding and doors. The house will be located on Pine Street in southeast Brainerd.

"Building on Faith Week" will conclude with the observance of International Day of Prayer and Action for Habitat.

Volunteers, including skilled building trades professionals, are needed to work half or whole days, a few hours, or several days to keep the project on schedule.
