Swimming and diving is one of the few Minnesota State High School League activities that doesn't determine a true team champion.
In MSHSL competition, individuals qualify for state based on their performances in a section meet. Those individuals then score points for their team at state. Entire teams do not advance to state.
This fall, the girls' swimming and diving coaches association will incorporate the true team concept that track and field adopted years ago. true team section and state swim meets will be added to the schedule.
In true team meets, every individual scores points for their team. In MSHSL meets, only individuals who finish in certain places score team points.
Brainerd coach Dan Anderson endorses the True Team concept.
"In the past we've had huge numbers, a lot of kids, a lot of depth," he said. "I think this rewards teams like we've had.

Head coach -- Dan Anderson, 20th season (12th at Brainerd, eight at Rock Springs, Wyo.)
Brainerd record -- 73-31 (.702).
Career record -- 147-64 (.697)
2003 finish -- 7-1 CLC, 8-2 overall, CLC and Section 8, Class 2A runner-up.
Returning state meet participants -- Jocelyn Jones, Brianna Elg.
Assistant coaches -- Ann Stenglein, Mary Streiff.
"I'm glad the coaches association got behind this. Some people put many hours into putting this together. It's a voluntary thing for teams to come. We hope every (school) shows up."
Two returning state participants and one all-conference performer showed up for practice Aug. 16. The trio should be the early nucleus of a team that has lost one conference dual meet in the last four years, has won four of the last five conference team titles and has been section runner-up to Elk River three straight years.
Senior Jocelyn Jones, who was 28th in the state 50-yard freestyle, returns. She may also swim the 100 free and two relays.
"Jocelyn had a great swim to get to state," Anderson said. "She had a great first week of practice. She would like to get back (to state) again. The 50 is such a madhouse for who gets (to state). There are some good sprinters in our section. The section champ is back. Jocelyn has a good shot to get back (to state)."
Junior Brianna Elg went to state with the 14th-place 200 free relay. She may also swim the 200 individual medley and two relays.
"This year I think Brianna also has a good chance (to go to state) in the butterfly," Anderson said.
Sophomore Robyn Wernberg was all-conference in the 100 backstroke. She also may swim the 100 free and two relays.
"Robyn had a great year as a freshman," Anderson said. "She could be conference champion in the backstroke. She has all the potential in the world to go to state in the backstroke also."
Juniors Maggie Boland and Kara Rutman earned all-conference honorable mention on the 200 free relay.
"What's nice is we have a lot of spots wide open for whoever steps up and takes them," Anderson said. "In the past four years we've had so many quality swimmers. We had some very good swimmers who were not able to make our conference or section team.
"This group of kids will get a chance to see what they can do with it. They all have to work hard. Swimmers and coaches have to keep up with the expectations we have now."
