The Cellular 2000 Chargers of Brainerd claimed the beat the Class C over-35 state amateur baseball championship last weekend.
Brainerd beat the New Market Rookies 6-4 in the semifinals. Rick Siegel was 4-for-4 with a 2-run homer. Jerry Oakley was 3-4, Tom Martin 2-5 and John Madsen 2-4 with two RBI. Ron Gilbert pitched a 4-hitter and had 12 strikeouts.
Brainerd beat the Montgomery Loons 14-0 for the title as it banged out 17 hits. Jerry Oakley was 3-4, Ron Gilbert 3-5 with five RBI, Joel Newton 3-5 with four RBI and Mark Smeltzer 2-3 and Martin 2-4.
Ken LeCocq pitched a 2-hitter, struck out five and walked only one. He retired 14 of the 15 batters he faced and did not allow a runner past second base.
Jerry Oakley and Kenny LeCocq were voted co-most valuable players in the championship game.
Pequot Lakes' Jill Redebaugh hired as sports intern
ST. PETER -- Jill Redebaugh of Pequot Lakes has been added as an intern for the sports information department at Gustavus Adolphus College for the 2000-01 school year.
Redebaugh received a degree in communication studies from Gustavus in May 2000. Her responsibilities will include updating team programs and rosters, writing news releases, supervising student workers, and broadcasting women's sports events live over the Internet.
A four-year letterwinner in volleyball at Gustavus, Redebaugh was a three-time All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honoree as a middle hitter. She was the ninth player in Gustavus history to record more than 1,000 kills in her varsity career.
