20 years ago (1989)

The Brainerd Dispatch has been awarded first place in the 1989 Minnesota Associated Press Contest for its continuing coverage of the Brainerd International Trade Centre story. Most of the entries were reported by Lew Hudson, senior reporter.

30 years ago (1979)

(Photo) Scott Parsons, a Brainerd State Hospital employee who once played for Ron Stolski at Park Center, is the newest member of the Brainerd football coaching staff, which includes Carl Hendrickson, Chet Stevenson and Steve Nunnink.

40 years ago (1969)

The Brainerd Warriors displayed speed, passing ability and a sound defense as they downed the Staples Cardinals 30-0 in their opening game of the season. Coach Dick Lagergren's crew exploded for three touchdowns in the second half to ice it.

60 years ago (1949)

Eighty-five percent of the tourist business in the state of Minnesota is found within a circle 75 miles in diameter around Brainerd, James Clark, director of the Department of Research and Development told the Rotarians at their meeting this noon.

80 years ago (1929)

Fifty men, armed with sawed-off shotguns, rifles and revolvers, grim in their determination, were divided into two posses, one in the Crow Wing County lake area and one near Backus and Park Rapids, to search for the Pequot bank bandits.

100 years ago (1909)

The board of education met in special session Saturday night to elect a superintendent of the city schools. On a vote of 7 to 1 W.C. Cobb was elected. On motion his salary was set at $2,000 per year.
