Small businesses get $4.3 million in assistance from Pohlad Foundation
Nearly 70 small businesses in Minnesota received a shot in the arm to weather the current economy, thanks to more than $4.3 million in grants and loans distributed by the Minnesota Chamber Foundation.

BAXTER - A Brainerd man was injured after the semi-truck he was driving ran off the road and rolled into the ditch in Baxter early Saturday morning, the State Patrol reported.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Alrik Hope Eksten passed away Feb. 28, 2009, at the VA Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born July 17, 1939, in Baxter, Minn., to Alrik and Nellie (Edeburn) Eksten. He grew up in Baxter and graduated from Washington High School in Brainerd, Minn. He worked as a bricklayer and later joined the Navy as an aviation electrician. He served in the Vietnam War. While in the Navy he was awarded Fifth Good Conduct Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He retired from the Navy after 26 years as a master chief.

Open Forum: Moose reports are a bunch of hooey
Last week there was an article about the declining moose herds in the state of Minnesota. Several theories of why this was happening were laid out, but there didn't appear to be a definitive answer, so the DNR said further studies were going to be needed. The article went on to say that the hunting season for these majestic animals didn't really have any impact on their declining numbers.

Open Forum: Harvest Dinner helped communication
Like all first steps it wasn't without its challenges. A couple of years ago, Mike Sams from the Cass County Farm Bureau brought up the idea that farmers and lake people need to get together to start developing the communication process we will need to address our future issues and there is no better way than over food.
