DUPAGE, ILL. -- Sophomore Courtney Stach was up to her usual tricks over the weekend and a few new players added extra pop to the Central Lakes College Raiders volleyball lineup.
The Raiders finished second in the season-opening College of Dupage tournament Friday and Saturday. Stach was named to the all-tournament team by collecting 42 kills, 54 digs, 9 blocks.
Freshman Jen Kempenich, of Maple Lake, added 42 kills, seven ace serves, 50 digs and 10 blocks in her first college tournament. Freshman setter Amy Fleischhacker, of Albany, added 13 kills, eight ace serves, 33 digs, eight blocks and 134 set assists.
"Jen Kempenich is a good all-around player and it's pretty clear what she can get better at, but for her first outing she played well," said Raiders coach Jane Peterson. "Also playing well was Amy. She sometimes doesn't get noticed as a setter because you have a Courtney Stach, but she did a lot of right things."
The Raiders lost to Vincennes, Ind. 24-30, 21-30 in the championship round. In the semifinals they defeated Highland, Ill. 25-30, 30-23, 15-9.
"I was pleased with our composure," said Peterson. "It was nice to see we could lose the first game and not panic about it. We made good adjustments which is nice for early in the year.
"Highland and Vincennes are both Division II teams with good hitters and good defense. But we made good adjustments against Highland to win."
The Raiders swept through round-robin play by defeating Ridgewater 30-28, 26-30, 30-24, Cedar Valley, Texas 25-30, 30-26, 30-20 and College of Dupage 30-21, 30-14, 30-11.
"There was a lot to be pleased about," said Peterson. "I had high expectations and I think we met a lot of them. I was really pleased with how we played as a team. There was a lot of good movement and a lot of good communication."
Sophomore Andrea Almsted made her transition from outside hitter to middle hitter look flawless. She tallied 41 kills, three ace serves, four digs and 23 blocks.
"I didn't know Andrea would be so effective offensively," said Peterson. "She's just so much more aggressive than last year. She frustrated other middle hitters by blocking so many other balls.
"I expected her to be a good blocker, but she had a nice offensive weekend."
