Outdoor News

LAKE MILLE LACS

East - Slip bobbers and leeches are working best during the day for walleyes on the 28- to 35-foot gravel edges. This same presentation will work at night on the deep gravel and shallow rocks. Muskie action is improving, although most big fish still seem to be chasing baits rather than eating them. Smallmouth bass are always active on the rocks and mid-depth weedlines.

West - Minnows, leeches, crawlers, and crankbaits have all produced walleyes on the tops and edges of the flats. The presentation that produces seems to be changing from one day to the next. The best bet at night is still to anchor off the flats and pitch slip bobbers and leeches. Smallmouth bass are hitting on the rocks and a few muskies have been caught in the bays and shallow rocks.

LAKE OF THE WOODS

Trolling spinner rigs and nightcrawlers has produced good walleye and sauger catches in 25 to 30 feet of water on the southeast side of Garden Island and the northeast side of Little Oak Island. Along the south shore, Zippel Bay and Morris Point are safe bets for walleyes in 30 to 32 feet of water, but jigs and minnows seem to be working best here.

LEECH LAKE AREA

Trolling Shad Raps during low-light periods has been best for walleyes off Sand Point, Cedar Point, Goose Island, and in_Trader's Bay. Lindy Rigs and leeches have turned some mid-day walleyes in the deep water off Stoney Point. Muskies are being seen on the weed edges in Sucker Bay and Portage Bay and on the rock reefs near Pelican Island. Panfish action has slowed, but largemouth bass are being caught on the east side of Bear Island in good numbers.

LAKE MINNETONKA

Water levels have risen and the bigger bass have moved shallow as a result. Topwater baits are now working best in three to six feet. Walleyes are being taken on a jig and fathead in the 14- to 17-foot weeds and northern pike are hitting sucker minnows on top of the weed flats in 10 to 12 feet. Sunfish are an easy catch in the weeds and the muskie bite has been "hit and miss" at best.

RAINY LAKE

Minnows are producing walleyes in 34 to 36 feet near the Fox Islands and in 36 to 40 feet on the reefs in Saginaw Bay. The Rat Root River area of Black Bay is giving up walleyes and crappies in 10 feet. A few bigger pike have started hitting crankbaits on the weedlines in Lost Bay. Smallmouth bass reports remain best on the Canadian side of the lake.

LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH

The walleye bite has been sporadic. If the wind blows, work shallow areas such as the Duck Pass, Tamarack Point, and Little Stoney Point with a jig and minnow. The best deeper bites have been on Sugar Bar, the Snaghole, and Moxes Hole in 14 to 22 feet with rigs and crawlers. The weeds on the west side have been best for pike and look for perch at the mouth of the river or the rocks off Raven's Point.

BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA

Redtails or leeches are now producing the majority of walleyes. Look to Gull Lake in 20 to 34 feet, Pelican Lake in 25 to 38 feet, and North Long Lake in 20 to 24 feet. Panfish action remains strong in the weeds of Lake Hubert, Nisswa Lake, Roy Lake, and Round Lake. Bass and northern pike are an easy catch on most lakes, but look for the bigger fish to be deep and most active early and late in the day.

CROSBY AREA

Lindy Rigs and crawlers are turning a few walleyes in the deep holes of the Mississippi River.
